residences for members of the staff.
This building provision is estimated to involve
an additional capital sum of 2,475,000 or roughly
$2,500,000.
The establishment of a Chinese Faculty -1,148,000.
These additional activities will involve the
expansion and improvement of the central University Office
at a cost of an additional capital sum of $200,000.
Thus, the scheme which I venture to press for
immediate acceptance is estimated to cost roughly $6,848,000
which is roughly £799,000.
I deplore and have always deplored the comparative
neglect of Chinese in the University of Hong Kong. I consider
that the establishment of such a Faculty of Chineseas is
contemplated is an indispensable step towards placing the
University in a position in which it can effectively
discharge its obligations to China. The University is very
cramped for space even in regard to its present activities.
Any extension of its scope will involve additional buildings
Taking these facts into consideration, the additional
capital sum asked for in connexion with these improvements
which I am anxious to inaugurate at once cannot, I submit,
be regarded as unreasonable.
I am convinced that the University of Hong Kong
should and can play a great part in the China of the future
and I place the University's claim to a share in the Boxer
Indemnity with confidence in the hands of Your Lordship and
his Colleagues.
I am writing Your Lordship a separate letter with
reference to the debts outstanding to the University of
Hong Kong on account of Scholarships awarded by the President
of Chinese Republic and various Chinese Provincial Govern-
ments and held by students here.
